Inside the house they finally try to interrogate the woman Shade saved from the Caldran special forces team. She is very hesitant to talk to any of them, and tries to poison herself with a very potent toxic since she’s a spy from the Kingdom of Valnaris. Jadeth stabilizes her and Shade kills himself by taking a bite.
As Shade dies, he’s visited by Teneborous who’s shocked to see him so soon. He lets him go back for now, but only on the deal that he tries to make Jadeth stressed out.
The group travels through the swamp, halted by a strange barrier, but finding a way to break it with antimagic flowers. They come up to Fort Aeon, but it seems to be deserted. A strange whisper carries on the wind, and before they know it, they’re under attack from Virgil and some of the tiefling warslaves from Ilvaluna.
The fight is challenging until they discover that staying in the light greatly increases their chances of survival. Virgil is seemingly trying to fight against his new programming, looking more man than machine. He recognizes that Juniper Graves had tried to spare the tieflings, not hurt them, but he is unable to fully stop himself at first.
He finally puts himself into a self destruct sequence that Henry puts a wall of force around. As he explodes, Jadeth stays with him, citing that no one should have to die alone. She is able to survive the explosion very narrowly, and Juno helps her up. They find a few stray tieflings now wandering aimlessly around the ruined cliffside, and Jadeth and Shade invite them inside the magic house.
