Jadeth is a young tiefling woman with pale olive skin, black hair, and dark brown eyes. She has small slate-colored horns on either side of her head that curve back in an S shape. While she is in her 60's, she doesn't appear any older than a human in their early 20's.
It used to be rare to ever see any of Jadeth's exposed skin, save for her tail, as she used to fully cover herself. Being a fugitive and spending years disgusted by her own face, she wore her scarf over her head and a mask of shadows to cover her face. She spent much of her time shrouded by shadows. Many who knew of her were uncertain if there was actually a person under the disguise, or if Hell's Heart was actually just personified darkness. For years, only her suitors saw the woman under the mask, and even then, only under the dim evening light.
After years of traveling with her group, Jadeth's finally comfortable being exposed again. Now she ties Lunara's old scraft around her leg, and has shed the mask of shadows. She keeps her father's goggles on her forehead most of the time, only pulling them down now when nervous or when combat starts to become messy. The lens on the left eye of her goggles was shattered when she was nearly killed by the Tear of Alandreas, but she chooses not to repair it- citing it as a memento that life is fleeting.
Jadeth also wears a near black coat and pants, and a chain mail chest piece. She wears sparse pieces of silver armor, more as a subtle touch of her previous nobility than for any sort of true protection. She wears an amulet on her neck that bears the Caldran seal and is fitted with a diamond to focus her formerly uncontrollable pact magic. Recently, she flipped the pendant upside down, representing the Caldra symbol of the "Rising Sun" over the former symbol of the "Fallen Star."
The years of mercenary work left Jadeth fit and strong under her outerwear, but not without also leaving its share of scars on her skin. The most distinctive scars are the one deep on her cheek and chin from the night her palace was invaded, and the newest she received from the fight with Ward the Starfarer. She has dark circles under her eyes, giving a look of constant paranoia, especially when paired with her poorly kept long hair. When frightened or upset, Jadeth's eyes begin to gleam, and matching red or blue energy wings feed from her shoulderblades.
Born to the Caldra royal family, House Godslayer, Jadeth spent the first few decades of her life as a spoiled noble. She grew up in the capital city Acheron, used to having money, power, and friends, and never expecting that one day it could be ripped away. Her mentor taught her about languages, history, and best of all: magic. She was always enamored by the idea of spells and heroics, but deep down knew her family would never allow her to study the blade nor magic in the neighboring kingdom of Valnaris while the tensions were so high. When her mentor offered her a solution, she eagerly accepted, not fully understanding what he intended to do to her.
She made a pact with her kingdom's primary god, The Aeon, in exchange for magic more powerful than most in the world. The mistake that was became apparent almost immediately. Jadeth was only a child when this deal was made, and as such, she couldn't control the magical outbursts in the slightest. Her mentor vanished from Acheron, and without guidance, she tried to surpress her gift to the best of her ability. However, she couldn't contain all the outbursts- lashing our and harming servants and visiting nobility when her emotions got the best of her.
The gravest of these came when she was a woman on the verge of adulthood. She had recently gone through an arranged marriage and finally had begun to see her destiny laid out for her. For the first time since she made the pact, she was happy with the person she was becoming. Unfortunately, that wasn't meant to last.
A group of assassins broke into the Obsidian Palace in the night, rousing Jadeth from sleep. She tried to fight them off with a sword, but it was too awkwardly heavy for her to properly wield at the time. One of them swung his own blade at her face, slashing apart her cheek in a deep and painful wound. Fearful for her life and the lives of those around her, she cried out for help from her god. Fed up with her hesitance for so long, he answered in a violent blast of overwhelming necrotic energy. Dark flames overtook the palace entirely, killing everyone inside except for Jadeth herself. The outside guards rushed in to find her hunched over the bodies of her mother, father, and wife, covered in blood with her veins and eyes darkened from the magic she was forced to endure.
The Court of Stars was conflicted by Jadeth's betrayal and regicide. The lords of Ravenspurn and Knoxville called for her immediate execution, but the remaining three lords were reluctant to sentence her to death without a trial. The captain of the Acheron royal guard worried about Jadeth's safety in the dungeon, having a feeling that Alastor the Godslayer would be planning to get her out of the way by any means necessary for an easy ascension. He helped her escape prison and gifted her a set of daggers and a mask of shadows. From there, he told her to run away and never return to her home.
While Jadeth was never the most patient noble, her reckless attitude only heightened since the death of her family. She took the contracts other mercenaries believed too risky, believing that her life mattered far less than those around her. When she witnesses a robbery turned murder in the alley of a ruined city called Limbo, Jadeth realized that the world was nothing like the spoiled life she led in Acheron.
Jadeth made her way towards Ravenspurn, figuring the best place to hide from the man that wanted her executed was right under his nose. In her time of need, two strange dwarven merchants found her balled up and shaking in the rain amongst the rubble of the city. One asked her if he could help, and she begged him for a way to tip the scale away from the evil of the world. His brother gave her a new age weapon, a blunderbuss she named Reconciliation. From that moment onward, she pledged to get revenge for those wronged, not matter the cost. Even if that meant sacrificing pieces of herself in the process.
She began to cleanse the population of anyone she considered vile, be it murderers, thugs, or thieves. She set her sights on hunting down the pair of thieves rumored to be living in the chapel of the most downtrodden area of the city, The Spill. She arrived cloaked in shadows, but never saw any evidence of the thieves living in the church. A figure caught her attention in the beams above, and they led her on a chase across the city until she finally cornered them in an alley. They escaped after a woman came looking for them, but Jadeth promised them she wouldn't lose track of her target forever.
Another year passed in Ravenspurn, with Alastor finally ascending the the throne and leaving an even worse lord in charge of the city. Jadeth finally decided it was time to say goodbye to her kingdom for the time being, making it all the way to Port Darwin before a distant light and tempting promise changed her course. On the road, she met up with Slenderbard and Juno, and that's where the story begins.
Juno and Jadeth had a complicated relationship at the beginning of their journey together. At the best of times, it was a mutual distrust, and at the worst of times, Jadeth was plotting to kill Juno in her sleep. Juno was uneasy around the tiefling murderer, and Jadeth was convinced that Juno had been harming her race. After their mutual friend, Spike the Cleric, calmed them down, they were finally able to admit some of their pasts to each other. With newfound trust, the two women began a friendship that they both had been longing for.
Juno is now one of Jadeth's closest companions in Ashen Cabaret. She trusts Juno's opinion above all others, and considers her the smartest one among them. Jadeth also recognizes the work that Juno had put into her research in her previous life and how it would have improved the lives around her. Due to this, Jadeth lives with a permanent guilt over her own choices. For months, Jadeth did her best to surpress any feelings she was developing for Juno, only finally admitting them after Juno was temporarily turned into a frog.
Juno was glad to hear that Jadeth felt the same way, and the two of them began dating. Together Juno's caution balances Jadeth's recklessly brave demeanor.
Jadeth and Slenderbard go back and forth in their relationship. More often than not, they can be found jovially drinking and discussing their past mercenary work, but that isn't always the case. Jadeth's deep rooted belief in justice no matter the cost can frequently conflict with Slender's habits of deception and dishonesty. Still, Slender and her have their moments, proving that friendships can have strange foundations. After traveling together for over a year, Jadeth does care a great deal for him. This care unfortunately doesn't extend so far as endorsing Slender as the king of Caldra.
Jadeth can attribute her newfound ease in spellcasting to watching Slender use his own magic. While still distrusting of the fickle nature of the arcane, his comfort in using magic not only to heal his allies but also to exploit enemy weaknesses is something Jadeth finds fascinating. Without watching him use his spells during their first encounter, it's likely Jadeth wouldn't have tried to use her magic for a much longer time.
In spite of not knowing him as long, Olaf was one of Jadeth's closest friends in Ashen Cabaret. The two of them bonded over their shared drinking habits and loss of their fathers. Jadeth recognizes Olaf as a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, always ready to back him up on the field. After Olaf helped Jadeth get revenge on the man that tricked her into her pact, she's promised her aid in his own vengeance on the Ironbeard family in Khem Dural.
Recent outbursts from Olaf's desire for revenge have put a strain on Jadeth and Olaf's friendship. Jadeth holds what Olaf did to the city of vampires against him. She's uncertain if she can ever forgive him for it and questions if he even deserves her trust anymore.
Jadeth longs to better understand Matanza, and secretly envies Juno's ability to communicate with them through her medallion of thoughts. She believes the little seabird is the best of the group, and trusts their judgement both on and off the battlefield. She does her best to do right by Matanza, citing them as a moral compass in place of her own broken one.
Jadeth and Shade have had their share of strange adventures. While Jadeth stands firmly against stealing, she recognizes that sometimes she needs to bend the rules to keep Shade safe. Shade has a benefit of never doing crimes out of malice, which makes Jadeth more patient with him than most. The adventure the two of them had in the dream world while Jadeth was turned into a dragon was one of the most fun endeavors she's had. She sometimes will go along with Shade's plans just to feel the thrill of recklessness with another, but she always is the first to bring him back down to earth when a plan becomes too outlandish.
Henry and Jadeth share a bond being powerful spellcasters. Jadeth watches everything Henry does with awe and looks for ways to imitate his magic. Henry recognizes that Jadeth looks up to him, and tries to keep her safe, even when he's getting up to deranged mischief. The two of them are crazy, but in unique ways that tend to often frighten the other.
