Kaelan, born into the cold, unforgiving depths of Menzoberranzan, was always an anomaly. While other Drow reveled in darkness and cruelty, Kaelan yearned for light and compassion. The constant strife, the backstabbing, and the worship of the malevolent Lolth disgusted him. He yearned for a life beyond the oppressive society of the Drow. A turning point came when he witnessed the brutal sacrifice of a young Drow child to appease Lolth. The horror of the event ignited a fire within him, a burning desire to escape the clutches of the Spider Queen.
Driven by a newfound sense of purpose, Kaelan fled Menzoberranzan, venturing into the unknown depths of the Underdark. Leaving his home was agonizing. He missed his family, the few friends who understood his quiet rebellion, even the familiar sights and sounds of the city. But the suffocating darkness of Drow society and the ever-present threat of Lolth's wrath outweighed his longing for home.
He faced countless dangers alone – monstrous creatures, treacherous terrain, and the ever-present threat of starvation. He learned to scavenge, to fight, to survive by his wits. He even, out of necessity, befriended a small group of Svirfneblin gnomes who took pity on the lone Drow and taught him the basics of navigating the Underdark's treacherous tunnels. Though grateful for their kindness, the gnawing loneliness never truly left him.
It was during this perilous journey, exhausted and on the brink of despair, that he stumbled upon the ancient ritual that would transform him into an Illrigger. Desperate for power to protect himself and perhaps, one day, return to free his people, he made the fateful decision to embrace the infernal pact. However, he soon realized the terrible price he had paid. The devil's influence threatened to consume his soul, turning him into the very thing he despised.
Now, burdened by his pact, Kaelan searches endlessly for a way to break it. He scours ancient texts, consults with reclusive sages, and even braves dangerous temples, seeking any clue, any ritual, any whisper of a chance to sever the infernal chains that bind him. But with each passing day, his hope dwindles. He fears that his quest is futile, that he is destined to remain an Illrigger forever, a creature of darkness trapped in a perpetual struggle against his own nature.
The weight of his actions as an Illrigger presses heavily upon his soul. To survive in the cutthroat world of the Underdark, he has had to perform deeds that violate his conscience. He has been forced to use his infernal powers to manipulate and deceive, to inflict pain and suffering, even to take lives. Each act, each transgression, leaves a scar on his soul, a constant reminder of the darkness he harbors within. The memories haunt his dreams, filling him with self-loathing and despair.
Fate, however, had other plans. Kaelan's wanderings led him to a hidden portal, a shimmering gateway that pulsed with an otherworldly energy. Drawn by an unknown force, he stepped through the portal and found himself in a realm of vibrant colors and fantastical creatures - the Feywild.
Here, amidst the whimsical beauty and chaotic magic, he encountered a band of Fey warriors who mistook him for an assassin. They were hunting a woman named Jadeth, a powerful sorceress with "pure blood" that posed a threat to their queen. Kaelan, bound by a geas placed upon him by his new Fey commander, was forced to join the hunt. The irony was not lost on him - a Drow, reviled for his own "pure blood," now tasked with spilling the blood of another.
Torn between his inherent aversion to violence and the magical compulsion forcing his obedience, Kaelan finds himself at a crossroads. Will he succumb to the darkness within him and fulfill his grim task, or will he find a way to resist the geas and find a powerful ally in helping him break his bond.
