Argos' Mire

Session 25: Revenge, Served Warm

Upon learning that Beatrice is in the same town as him, Slenderbard begins to plan his revenge on his former friend. Meanwhile, Juno, Jadeth, and Henry, all head to Ruckas’ place to learn about why he was sent to Port Darwin. He was working out ways to put mortal souls into machines to create a better system of guards and servants, citing that the souls were often soldiers that died young, or servants that died prior to their contracted work expiring. Jadeth takes issue with it, but Ruckas cites that such things are normal in the Republic of Kreme.

During their interrogation, Matanza attempts to catch some fish, but notices Shade running around trying to light fishing boats on fire. Thinking fast, they sink the fishing boat to prevent the spread of fire. Shade sees this and runs to get a guard to blame Matanza for destroying the boats. The guard shrugs them both off, so Shade regroups with Olaf and Slender as Slender begins to enact his plan.

Slender convinces Olaf that he needs help while disguised as Argos, telling the dwarf it’s for revenge. Olaf states that it is a noble cause, and Shade knocks out the guard in charge of keeping people out of the noble district. Slender takes the appearance of the guard so that the gang can slip in Beatrice’s house without much notice. The trio heads upstairs to find Beatrice plagued with the same comatose state that has overtaken half the town, and Slender finds a hidden door with a chest in it. As they get ready to kill Beatrice, her children walk in, horrified by the intruders. Slender grabs Shade, Olaf, and the chest and teleports them all back to their ship.

They arrive as Jadeth, Juno, Henry, and Matanza finish talking the leader of the mercenary group, Damien – the Cinder Touched Warrior, down from ransacking their boat. In talking him down, Jadeth reveals her identity, and gets one final threat from Damien before he leaves them be. Juno is unable to open the chest Slender’s group received, so Olaf swings Talon into it. It creates an explosion that wipes out a good portion of the ship’s crew – as well as killing Beatrice. Henry uses his necromancer abilities to revive her and send her home, hoping it’ll resolve at least one problem.

As Jadeth yells at Slender for not checking the chest for magic, they become surrounded by the Shadowflame Revenant mercenaries. Ashen Cabaret gets arrested by the Councilman on the charges of stealing from him and kidnapping his wife. The night comes with them locked in cages outside and stuck waiting for a trial, but Jadeth’s former friend in the Revenants lets her out of her cage. He tells her about a deal that they made with her father to keep her safe and tells her to leave the city. Jadeth draws her sword and declines abandoning her friends, trying to get Greg to free them. Greg sighs when she refuses to listen and knocks her unconscious, but Henry and Juno are able to stop Greg and wake Jadeth again. She wakes all the other Revenants, and Damien smirks that she’s finally showing a little spine.

The two engage in one-on-one combat, with Jadeth coming out victorious after taking very little damage. Damien admits he’s proud that she became strong enough to defend herself, and he releases the rest of Ashen Cabaret while ordering his men to lay on the ground and look defeated when the Councilman comes. They book it into the woods, but come across yet another ritual.

Henry interrupts it with a huge fireball, killing all the cultists at once. He raises a few bodies to serve as his crispy skeletal guard, but it disturbs the lich that the cultists were serving. Henry and the lich argue back and forth for a moment, and finally the two of them engage in a necrotic duel. Henry’s skeletons are unable to harm the lich, so Juno takes a shot at him with her crossbow. It does significant damage, so the lich extends a hand and knocks her dead with power word: kill. Shade and Olaf both rush the lich and his gargantuan skeletal monstrosity.

Jadeth pulls Juno into a bush and resurrects her partner, and Slender joins them to give Juno healing. The lich hands a bomb to Matanza and it explodes on the group. Shade comes out of nowhere to attack the lich, and also receives his very own power word: kill. Juno gets stunned after using her mage handcuffs on two of the liches’ three arms, so Jadeth throws herself out of the sky and drives Ifrit through his final arm. The group resurrects Shade and finishes off the lich, and it seems like their troubles are over. Henry lets them know that the lich has <word i forgot but its basically a horcux>, and they manage to destroy two, but with the final one still out there, it means that the lich can return…
