Ashen Cabaret makes it through the forest on the way back towards Port Darwin, but Slender decides to play a little practical on the party by turning invisible and haunting Shade. The tabaxi runs back to camp warning them that there’s a ghost in the woods, so Jadeth and Olaf run off to try to find it. They begin wildly swinging their swords, forcing Slender to dodge them. He lies and describes the made up ghost to the party, and on the way back to town he sees a real ghost matching his exact description.
In Port Darwin, Juno, Matanza, and Slender head into the temple to see if they can discover more information about the current problems the town is facing. Olaf and Jadeth both stay outside while wearing disguises, and a woman passes by and begs Olaf to perform as a clown at her son’s birthday party. Both Olaf and Jadeth seem uninterested until she offers wild sums of money as payment.
The others come out of the temple and inform the duo of the sleep plague that’s luring the inhabitants of the town to sleep and how it seems to be tied to the border ethereal. Slender heads off to see if he can gather more information. Jadeth and Olaf request they put that on hold so they can all go get paid by putting on a show at the party. Juno and Matanza hesitantly agree to it, so they unknowingly head to the mansion belonging to Beatrice, Slender’s arch-nemesis.
At the mansion, they put on a dangerous show for the children, only getting paid partial sums due to the property damage. T Rex Jadeth brings the kids on a joyride around town and finds Slender. He learns where the other’s disappeared to and begins making his way towards Beatrice’s mansion. Slender catches Matanza by the mansion, with Juno and Olaf having already gone to begin looking into the sleep plague.
When he learns who the mansion belongs to, he slips into a rage and tries to cast a spell on Beatrice. The Shadowflame Revenant guard’s arrest him, and throw him into Jail. Matanza comes to let the others know, and Olaf assures them that he can find a way to get Slender out. He heads inside and begins chatting and getting all the guards drunk.
One of them comes outside and Jadeth threateningly seduces him into giving her information and joining her ship crew, only to find out he’s actually a colony of flies inside a suit of armor that’s wanted for murder. He later kills the leader of the Shadowflame Revenant’s nephew, which I’m sure will have zero negative consequences.
While Olaf is distracting the guards, Slender is able to slip away with a dimensional door. He shapeshifts into Derrick so he can continue walking around the town without notice. Juno and Jadeth head up to where Cinder Touched, the leader of the Revenants, is staying to see if they can learn where Slender’s equipment is being stored. Jadeth is irritated to learn that Cinder Touched stole her style after she departed from the mercenary group, and he nearly recognizes her voice.
Juno sneaks into the governor’s home while Jadeth teaches the warforged guards about guns, and she swipes all of Slender’s stuff back. They all head to an inn to spend the night out of their house for once, but Jadeth and Juno are plagued with nightmares. In the morning, Jadeth tries to make the crew breakfast but catches the inn on fire. Matanza, her, and Juno all work to get everyone out safely.
