Exogenesis

Session 8: Birdsong

Casper combines his dream spirit powers with Lazslo to show Dreamer a dream of himself as a baby. A much larger spirit of Casper walks alongside them, looking more like a tiger than a housecat. He watches as The Endling descends from the sky, but it bends at the willpower of Dreamer’s mother. She threatens to take the power she gave the Endling away, but this doesn’t seem to bother the Endling. Dreamer wakes up again as the giant monster destroys the town in search of a shadowtouched.

While leaving Jruska and traveling towards The Gate, the team is joined by a goblin mechanic with an appetite for fine shrooms named Klernt (Slips). Together, they travel towards the last known location of Therron Rithe. The airship lands outside of a large ongoing carnival called the Moondance Festival that is gearing up to celebrate the portal to the Feywild opening come dawn.

The festival is full of merriment and games, but the team doesn’t forget about the dangerous criminal lurking nearby. Charlie and Ren work to scope out the function, and the group decides to jump on giant moths to see if they can spot any signs of life. In the distance, there is a lone campfire set up on one of the ridges situated on the opposite side of the forest that hides The Gate from non-fey. Dreamer also spots Cayden Calloway, the thief and healer who keeps mysteriously appearing and leaving without much to say.

The gang runs over to where she’s drinking tea at the bar, and Charlie is angered to see her– claiming her presence is far too big of a risk. Calloway attempts to leave, but becomes fascinated by the snail form that The Accountant had taken. She pleads with Charlie to let her have 24 hours to enjoy herself for once, and the arch mage reluctantly allows it. Cal demonstrates her gripe with Charlie by firing off a lightning bolt at The Accountant, getting hurt by her own attack when the chains of the Soul Oath appear on her arms.

She turns her attention to Xaveria and becomes distraught when she learns that the only thing Xav remembers about her past life was the first time the two of them met. She hopes that the two of them can remain friends, even if Xav doesn’t know who she is. She’s excited that Xaveria still sees her old “team”, and absorbs the piece of herself that was trailing Xaveria.

The others head over to the dragon that guards the festival and portal and warn him about Therron Rithe. He seems mostly unbothered since only fey can navigate through the woods to the portal. The night goes by and Dreamer wakes up and utilizes his magic diary to learn that Cayden Calloway killed Xaveria’s previous life. Him and the Accountant also find that their magic items were stolen.

Klernt is able to lead the group to The Gate, where they find Calloway sitting in front of it, playing a sad song on her violin. She gives the items back, then recounts her previous experience with the last Accountant watching her village come under siege without helping. This poor memory is enough for the demon inside of her to take control of Calloway and murder The Accountant. Charlie arrives on the back of the guardian dragon, warning the group not to kill Cal lest they unleash the demon on the world.

Xaveria and Dreamer are able to free Calloway from the demon’s control, but The Accountant lashes out at her once he is revived. Therron Rithe steps out of the bushes, thanking Cal and the others for revealing the location of The Gate to him. His men move inside, and he charms the fey dragon right before he joins them. Charlie, Cal, and Ren let the others know they’ll take care of the dragon, so they all chase Rithe inside the portal.
